Coraline

Coraline has easily become one of my new favorite animations. Directed by Henry Selick, the visionary director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, from a story by Neil Gaiman, Coraline is the first stop-motion animation to be originally filmed in 3D.
The animation was produced by LAIKA and distrubuted by Focus Features, and it was an effort of 450 artists, and more than 250 technicians and designers. The production was set in a 140,000 square-foot warehouse in Portland, Oregon.
Since the animation is stop-motion based, all of the figures were created by the artists, and many figures stood 12" in height. Sets themselves were gigantic, built hollow so that puppetteers can move figures frame by frame.
To create Coraline, about 120 shots were taken in order to get 5 seconds of animation, and each 5 seconds would take about a week.

They Might Be Giants help with the soundtrack.
