Bread & Puppet Theater and Museum

"Bread & Puppet Theater, one of the oldest noncommercial, self-supporting theaters in the country, has created politically and socially aware shows with commitment to community participation since 1963. At present, our shows are antiwar, anti-Capitalism, anti-Globalization and pro-Vermont independence." Bread & Puppet

I came across this poster at 915 Spring Garden during Philadelphia Open Studio Tours, and it appealed to me due to its outsider art qualities. Later research led me to their website, where you can read about some of its philosophy, including the concept of Cheap Art.

According to Bread & Puppet, "Cheap Art hopes to reestablish the appreciation of artistic creation by making it available to a wider audience and inspire anyone to revel in an art making process that is not subject to academic approval or curatorial acceptance."

The theater itself is powered by artists and activists working together to create a theatrical show filled with music, movement, dance, spoken word, puppets, et cetera.

"Learning is accomplished by engaging in different aspects of Bread and Puppet show production, which may include text research, movement and dance experimentation, mask and puppet manipulation, vocal and instrumental music or organized noise making, printmaking, singing, papier maché, puppet making and stilt dancing."

This post will be edited after I actually visit the Theater.
